Peter van Egmond passes away at the age of 68
Published on 04 January 2025 by Misha van der Kroon
On Thursday, 2 January, Peter van Egmond, the renowned Dutch Formula 1 photographer, passed away peacefully at home in his sleep at the age of 68. His body succumbed after a hopeless battle with cancer. Despite his hopes that medication and treatments would allow him a bit more time with family and friends, his condition deteriorated rapidly in the past weeks. Peter leaves behind a wife and three children.
Over the course of his career, Peter attended 569 Grands Prix as a photographer. His final race was the São Paulo Grand Prix last November, where he witnessed Max Verstappen’s spectacular comeback drive in the rain – an emotional farewell.
“I can’t really complain. Looking back, I’ve had a wonderful life, filled with amazing memories thanks to my work, and I’ve met so many great people. Sadly, it is what it is, but I wish they had moved the finish line a little further away for me.”
These are the heartfelt words of a man who, since the beginning of 2024, knew he was terminally ill but secretly and fervently hoped for just a bit more time. Always positive, Peter fought a battle he knew he ultimately couldn’t win.
Since Max Verstappen joined Formula 1, many of us at the Verstappen Info Page and Verstappen.com have had the privilege of getting to know Peter. He was always there for us with advice and support, both on and off the track. His cheerful personality and the stories and anecdotes from his long career at the circuits kept us hanging on every word.
Wherever Peter went, he was a beloved guest. His passing leaves an immense void not only within the Oracle Red Bull Racing team and the Verstappen.com team, but across the entire Formula 1 paddock. Peter was a true professional, but above all, he was a kind and good-hearted person who has sadly seen the checkered flag waved far too early for himself.
On behalf of Max, Jos Verstappen, Raymond Vermeulen, and everyone at Verstappen.com, we want to express our deepest condolences to his wife Gea, his children, family, friends, and acquaintances. We wish them strength in coping with this tremendous loss and finding a way to honor his memory.
