During the first session they were due to the lottery not on the front but in the mostly dry second session McLaren was on top again with Mika Häkkinen fastest in 1:18.881 followed by David Coulthard and .... Michael Schumacher who was 0.7 sec behind the Fin. The dried-up track showed a more realistic view of the differences between the cars.
