Just a few drivers were able to improve their time during the afternoon session. Frentzen was able to climb to second time and both Williams cars improved very well but winner of the day remained Eddie Irvine with 1:23.577 followed by Frentzen, Michael Schumacher, Häkkinen, Zanardi and Damon Hill.
