Coulthard on pole, Jos 17th

Published on 14 April 2001 by Verstappen Info Page

David Coulthard will be on pole position in the San Marino Gran Prix. Next to him on the front row is his team mate Mika Hakkinen. Both Schumachers are on the second row. Jos did not qualify any better than 17th due to mechanical problems.

Finally on pole again

In the qualification Jos was able to test the new suspension for the first time. Due to mechanical problems and the weather Arrows was not able to do taht earlier. In the first hour it was extremely busy and the threat of rain made everyone decide to do a fast lap before it actually would start raining. On a wet track Jos set a 12th time. Right after that lap he did another run in which he improved his time, helped by the new suspension and better weather. After it seemed it would not rain anymore, Jos stayed in the pitbox until 10 minutes before the end. In his third run he improved his time again by 0.9 seconds.

Jos was preparing for his fourth and last run when trouble struck again. The dynamo did not work properly so Jos had to change to the T-car. Unfortunately he did not succeed to improve his time in that car, this made it possible for Enrique to improve his time and position himself in front of Jos.

We spoke with Jos after the qualification. "I am very disappointed. We wanted to make some improvements for the last run. The car reacted good on each change we made and we would have been able to set a faster time for sure. We have not driven much on Friday and this morning we did not do much due to the weather, the qualification should have been better."

About the new suspension he commented: "A good improvement. We were able to test it during the qualification and I am very pleased with it."
