Qualification: Jos disappointing 16th, M. Schumacher on pole

Published on 12 May 2001 by Huub Rothengatter

Jos will start tomorrow's Austrian Grand Prix from a 16th position. Michael Schumacher will start from pole position just in front of Juan-Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher. McLaren did not have a good qualification, David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen will both start from the 4th start row.

16th time for Jos

The qualification session started at 1pm in very sunny and warm conditions, aftre 20 minutes the first driver, Enrique Bernoldi, entered the track. After ten minutes Jos makes his first run. The first fast lap gives him 8th time at that moment. The next lap he drops to ninth although he improved his time with 0.5 seconds.

Laughing is still part of the package at Arrows

At that time it appeared that McLaren are not their usual good self. Hakkinen gets stuck on 4th and Coulthard on 8th. Williams is doing good business today. R. Schumacher and Montoya can tip M. Schumacher's pole position time and battle eachother for 2nd and 3rd. In the end Montoya wins this battle and he is the one who will start from a promising 2nd position.

Jos's second run did not give him what he wished for and even his third run was not very successfull. This last run existed out of two fast laps. The first lap did not give any improvement because Jean Alesi is kept Jos up and the last lap something went wrong in the last conrner. What exactly went wrong was not known because Jos's car had not returned to the pits yet. Jos spun off track and M. Schumacher was able to avoid Jos when he passed. But it made him go onto the gravel.
After the session Jos was very disappointed. He had hoped for more. We hope to speak to him later today and ask him what went wrong in that last lap.
