Montoya on pole; Jos outside the 107%

Published on 01 September 2001 by Verstappen Info Page

By clocking very fast times at the end of the qualification Juan Pablo Montoya made 4 drivers end up outside the 107% of pole position time: Jos Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, Enrique Bernoldi and Tarso Marques. Despite not having qualified, the race directors have decided to let them participate because of the extraordinary circumstances.
Ralf Schumacher starts second and his brother Michael third (on 2.6 seconds from pole!). Jos had a difficult qualification and got stuck on 19th position. He drove all his runs on intermediates, which brought him not much luck. At the end of his last run he did not have enough fuel to do another lap. Something other drivers had benefit from: Heinz Harald Frentzen managed to put his Prost Acer on 4 position.

Later today we hope to speak to Jos and ask for his comments and hopefully he will be able to confirm if he can start in the race tomorrow.
