Huub Rothengatter is still very positive about Jos's return in Formula 1

Last weekend not only Jos Verstappen and Raymond Vermeulen were in Spa but also Jos's manager Huub Rothengatter. Jos and Raymond were present on Friday, Huub spent his time walking around in the paddock on Saturday and Sunday. Enough material for the media and fans to speculate, guess and spread rumours. We were after the truth and spoke with Huub Rothengatter who is still very positive about Jos's return in Formula 1.
What does it feel like to be back on a circuit?
"I enjoyed it but was also surprised that nothing much changes within F1. I haven't been to a Grand Prix since Monaco 2001. It just seemed I haven't been away, I have been in F1 since 1981 and nothing has changed a lot. The motorhomes look better and fancier but the 'system' is still the same. It is good to meet old friends."
You were not there on a freebie, right?
"No not really. Raymond and me showed some business relations around. We have been in the paddock, motorhomes and in the pitboxes. They all absolutely loved it and were very impressed. We have successfull contacts with those people and this strengthens the relationship."
What about the relations with the teams, for a 2003 seat for Jos, how are you getting on with that?
"It was good to see the team representatives face to face after having spoken to them several times. There still is a great interest for Jos, I noticed that during this weekend. I am still positive about Jos's return in Formula 1"
What is that comment based upon?
"Listen, Jos could have had a drive this season, that is known. Sometimes people remind me of my '99 percent certain' quote, which is one a lot of people do not appreciate. The fact that we could have had Jos driving Grand Prix this season proves I am right. At the moment though it is better to look out for a long term contract. Just stepping in and then see where it ends is not what we want. We want more security in the future."
Do you have an offer or a contract? The fact that Jos could have had a drive this year doesn't say anything about next year.
"The many reactions I have had give me this good feeling. I have heard enough about Jos to calculate how good Jos's chances are and how serious people's interest is. Unfortunately I cannpt give you any details. Again, I am still very positive about Jos's comeback."
