Webber surprisingly fastest in first qualification session

Published on 05 April 2003 by Huub Rothengatter

Jaguar had a good day today and will start in the second half of tomorrow's qualification session. Pizzonia set an 8th time today and Mark Webber surprised friend and foe with a fastest time. He was even faster than Rubens Barrichello who had the fastest time for a long time and thought he would be the last one out tomorrow. Jos held up his reputation as an excellent rain driver and set an acceptable 1.26.886, which gave him 15th position. Jenson Button had a moment and caused a red flag situation; he lost control over the car during his flying lap. Despite substantial damage he managed to limp back to the pits. His crash caused the session to be stopped for about 5 minutes due to debris on the track.
