Jos managed a 15th time at the first day in Monza, Schumacher was fastest and Hill disappointed with a seventh time. Jos' official statement after the race: "We are running a totally different set-up which we've never used before and it's worked quite well. Sure, we have some more work to do and more improvements to make, but it's encouraging."

"We still have some understeer in the Parabolica, but we seem to have got rid of it in the slow speed corners."

"We picked up a bit of a traction problem mid-session but when we got rid of it we got some understeer back. We also have too much downforce so we can try less of that tomorrow and we've had problems with the brakes. They're good at first but then tend to fade a bit within the braking distance, so we have work to do there as well."
