Max is a mechanic for a day

After an eventful first Florida Winter Series round at Sebring, Max Verstappen has no time to take it easy as the organisers of the Florida Winter Series decided to squeeze a four day workshop in between two race weekends. It's aimed at providing the youngsters with something more than just a racing preparation, as it covers the mechanical, engineering and athletic side.

On Wednesday, the competitors headed for Stuart, where they became mechanics for a day, working on their own cars, with the help of the mechanics and engineers who work with them on track. "We are doing something really original", commented an enthusiastic Luca Baldisserri, the head of the Ferrari Driver Academy and guiding light behind the series. "Today, all those taking part were able to get first hand experience of their own cars and to literally get their hands dirty and get useful experience when it comes to understanding the job of a racing driver."

Max is more than keen to get his hands dirty: "On Wednesday I helped out in the taking apart and cleaning of my racing car. I've checked the gearbox and the differential as well as changing the brake pads." For Max the day was a return to the 'old days' in karting. "I love these days, I used to help prep my kart but now I'm helping out on my single seater. It's a process I've missed since my last kart race."

Thursday, saw Verstappen junior return to school as the drivers attended a lecture on the workings of a racing car. As the youngsters already know a thing or two about racing, this is no beginner's class. Hopefully the workshop serves as a good preparation for round two of the Florida Winter Series at Palm Beach International Raceway, Monday February 5 till Wednesday February 7.
