Some additions to Jos signing for Tyrrell: Signing of his contract with Tyrrell was independent of sponsorship deals that Jos brings along to the team. We still hope though that Jos' loyal sponsors will support him again next year. Also announced today was that Sauber will indeed be using Ferrari-engines which will be further developed under its own "Petronas"-label. Developments are managed by Osamo Gotu (see our item of November, 11). With the announcement of its new engine deal Sauber also announced that Nicola Larini will become the team-mate of Johnny Herbert at Sauber for next year. Rumours about a return of Nigel Mansell are getting increasingly stronger but our bet is that Martin Brundle will stay at Jordan.

Tonight there will be a comprehensive interview with Jos on Dutch television (Nederland 3) and Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf has an exclusive interview with Jos in its saturday morning edition. See press release for the complete text of the Tyrrell press release.

In 1964 the Ken Tyrrell Racing Team was born, soon to become the Tyrrell Racing Organisation. In the same year, Ken signed a young driver called Jackie Stewart, who dominated that year's 1-litre Formula 3 racing. From 1968 on Tyrrell has been active in Formula 1, starting out with a Matra chassis. Tyrrell had it first win after only 5 races in F1 at Zandvoort, winning twice again in the same year. Jackie Stewart finished second in the drivers championship.

From 1968 through this year Tyrrell has been active in Formula 1 and is one the oldest teams still active. From 1971 on Tyrrell used their own designed chassis. In the mid seventies Tyrrell surprised with a ‘six-wheeler’. The F1 car with four front small wheels secured a 1st and 2nd place for Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler in the Swedish GP in 1976. Changes in tyre technology reduced the advantage of six wheels over four. In 1989 Jean Alesi had his F1 debut with Tyrrell. Having driven with Ford, Honda and Illmor and Yamaha the team has now returned to Ford as engine-supplier.

In 1997 Tyrrell will be using the Ford Cosworth ED V8 customer engine, losing the Yamaha V10 to TWR Arrows. Tyrrell has competed in 402 GP’s, has had 19 pole positions and 33 wins. The team has scored two Constructor Championships and three driver championships.
