Max ends Norisring weekend in P1 and in style

Published on 29 June 2014 by Stefan Meens

After clinching three wins on the trot at Spa-Francorchamps last week, Max Verstappen continued his impressive run of results with his third consecutive win at the Norisring. After winning the first race Saturday morning, followed up by a victory on Sunday morning, the Van Amersfoort Racing driver took the chequered flag in the final race of the weekend.

Like the other two races in the streets of Nuremberg, it proved to be another chaotic one. As the drivers line up on the grid, Dutchman Dennis van de Laar parks his car on the side of road as the start lights are already one. Therefore, the start sequence is aborted and the field heads for another warm-up lap.

Max: “Im not sure what happend. The start was aborted at the exact time the lights went off. That’s why we all did another warm-up lap.”
When the lights go out legitimately, Max has a good start. Unfortunately, his team mate Jules Szymkowiak crashes with Roy Nissany. In the ensuing chaos, Jake Dennis outbrakes himself and catapults himself into Tom Blomqvist’s car. Not for the first time this weekend, the safety car makes an appearance.

“Even though we had to do another standing start, all went well. The car has been amazing all sessions and all races and I only have the Van Amersfoort Racing team to thank for that”, says Max after the race.
After the rubble is cleared, the race is resumed and Max continues to lead the field. Esteban Ocon tries to keep up but after a slight mistake from the Frenchman, Verstappen junior is able to break Ocon’s slipstream and establish a comfortable lead until the finish.

Max: “The track conditions were better than in the morning and it really helped me create a gap towards Ocon. The car was perfect and I was able to be faster without taking risks.”
Meanwhile, Van Amersfoort Racing team mate Gustavo Menezes drives an impressive race by finishing fifth after starting from fiftheenth. The American ends the race behind Max, Ocon, Jordan King and Santino Ferrucci.

Max’ win is rather unique as it completes his second hat-trick in a row after winning all races at Spa-Francorchamps and at the Norisring. He has now affirmed his second place in the FIA Formula 3 European championship behind leader Ocon.
“Im so happy. The collaboration with the team has been terrific all season long. We race to win and that’s what we did!”, concludes a triumphant Verstappen junior.
