Podium for Max in first Moscow F3 race
Published on 12 July 2014 by Stefan Meens
After six victories in a row, Max Verstappen finished the first race of the seventh FIA Formula 3European Championship round at the Moscow Raceway in third. Championship leader Esteban Ocon went on to take a comfortable win ahead of Jordan King.
The first few rows on the grid have a good start and pole man Ocon leads ahead of King, Tom Blomqvist and Max after the first lap. The latter is chasing down Blomqvist and manages to pass him with a wonderful manoeuvre at the final turn of lap 2. After that, the race settles with the top four staying closely together.
Nevertheless, the gaps between the front runners are too big to attempt an overtaking move. In the closing stages, Max closes in on King with only half a second between them as they start the last lap. Unfortunately, the Dutchman is unable to seize second place and has to settle for third behind Ocon and King.
“In contrast to yesterday, we had the speed again and our race pace wasn’t bad at all. Unfortunately, I was only able to pass Blomqvist. I was closing in on King but the race was too short to mount an attack”, explains Max.
“We’ll tweak a few things here and there ahead of qualifying so let’s see what happens then.”
