Max and Jules attend the DTM pre-event in Cologne

Published on 11 August 2014 by Niels Hendrix

Just a week prior to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship race meeting at the Nürburgring, the planet’s most competitive young-talent series showcased itself in Cologne’s city centre. The two Dutchmen Max Verstappen and Jules Szymkowiak (both Van Amersfoort Racing) made the trip to Cologne and thrilled the crowds.

16-year old Max and 18-year old Jules patiently signed autographs, answered the questions of the fans and also were ready to have their pictures taken together with fans. During Q&As on the big stage erected on Cologne’s “Neumarkt”, the two rookies talked about the mentors supporting them: In the case of Max it’s his father, Jos Verstappen, while Jules can rely on the support of the current F1 driver Adrian Sutil.

“We exercise together and we also talk about a lot of things that have to with motor racing”, Jules said. “And in addition, Adrian helps me to get contact to those important in the motor-sport world.”
Meanwhile, Max is happy about the tips his father provides him with. “The last tip was how to behave in a wet race with aquaplaning risk.” But Jos does not only support his own son, revealed Jules. “His father even helps me, every now and then. And my engineer also always represents a big support for me.”

Both young guns enjoyed the event that was attended by numerous visitors. “Events in the heart of a city always are nice”, said Max. And his team-mate is convinced: “Some of today’s spectators certainly also will be on site next weekend at the Nürburgring. I also am looking forward to the races at the Nürburgring although the circuit represents virgin soil, to me. Therefore, I’m going to spend some time in the simulator, this week, to be perfectly prepared for the practice session on Friday.”
