Starting on position number 13 on a wet Interlagos circuit Jos took off like a rocket. After 3 laps Jos already occupied the 6th position. After an incident in lap 4 Jos was on position 8 again, but overtook Brundle in lap 7 to occupy the 7th position. At that moment Hill had the lead firmly in hand, followed by Villeneuve, Alesi, Barrichello, Schumacher, Frentzen and Verstappen.

In lap 10 Jos had his first fastest lap time of 1:36.806 which he improved in lap 14 to 1:35.435. In lap 20 Jos had to give up because of problems with the valves of the Hart-engine. Just like in Melbourne the Hart V8 couldn't stand the amount of pressure that Jos laid on the engine.

The rest of the race was dominated by Damon Hill. Jacques Villeneuve rather stupidly spun off the track as well as Barrichello who was too eager to perform on his home Grand Prix.
