The Belgian parliament has approved a bill banning tobacco advertising from Jan. 1, 1999. The ban would include sporting and cultural events. The government of Wallonia warned the proposed ban could threaten the Belgian Grand Prix. Wallonia's socialist premier, Robert Collignon, indicated his administration would seek to persuade the federal government if not to ditch, then at least to modify the proposed legislation and exempt Formula One racing. He stated that the race is an important part of Wallonia's image and that millions of dollars of revenue would be lost.

Two inches of snow have prevented Michael Schumacher from further testing his new Ferrari. The car will now be kept in the pits for the rest of the week. Testing will be continued at Jerez, Spain, on January 16. This date has been moved forward from January 19. Eddie Irvine will join Michael in Spain and they will both continue testing.
