Max Verstappen: “In a couple of years I can fight for victories”

Published on 12 November 2015 by Mike Motilall

The first main event for Max Verstappen, for the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend, is him partaking in the FIA press conference. Before the lights turn green for the race in three days’ time, Max had been asked to answer some questions from the international press corps. He mainly reflected on the past season.

We are approaching the end of your first year of Formula One experience. In which areas do you feel you have developed most? “I think I improved in every area, Max tells us. “Especially after only one season in lower categories, when you make the jump to F1, I think the raw speed is there. It’s just you need to develop in all the other area’s and I think I coped with that pretty well. So I am pretty happy with how the whole season went in general. Qualifying I think especially, that’s all going well now. I expected it to be like that because I am still very young and I have a lot of things to learn.” What made the difference with qualifying? “Gaining experience and understanding the tyres a bit more.”

How much of a hurry are you in to get yourself into a top team? “I’m never in a hurry,” Max replies, “but of course, if you have two fourth places you’re very close to the podium, you want to be on it. But I still have a lot of things to learn and I’m pretty happy where I am right now – but hopefully in a couple of years I can fight for victories.”

When asked about the weak and strong points of Scuderia Toro Rosso, Max had the following to say: “The strongest point is, it’s like a big family and I think when a driver feels well in a team, also the performance is better, so definitely enjoying it. Also, the team is still very young and they are very ambitious and I think, compared to last year, the car is a big step forward.” And the weak points? “I don’t really have a big weak point in the team,” Max relays. “It’s just that we’re missing a little bit of top speed, maybe that’s the only thing”, he cheekily adds.

The Brazilian Grand Prix will take place on Sunday November 15th at 17:00 hrs. Dutch time.
