Max opts for different tyre allocation than Carlos

Published on 23 March 2016 by Stefan Meens

Pirelli, Formula 1’s sole tyre supplier, has announced the teams’ tyre choices ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix. From this season onwards, the Italian manufacturer supplies three different compound per weekend, instead of two. The drivers must use at least two of them during the race. Like the Australian Grand Prix, Pirelli will supply the medium, soft and super soft slicks. Each driver can choose up to thirteen sets of tyres per weekend. Their choice has to be made well in advance, three months prior to the Grand Prix.

Scuderia Toro Rosso’s drivers, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz have chosen different strategies with the Dutchman opting for one set of the mediums, seven softs and five super softs. His Spanish team mate will be able to use one more of the medium compound and one less of the softs. Of all drivers, Max is the one with the most softs Pirellis.

Manor is the team that differs the most from the rest of the paddock. Both Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto opted for four sets of the medium tyres, seemingly going for a conservative approach. For a complete overview of the teams’ tyre choices, see table below.
