Jos: “What Max has shown on track, has had major influence”

Jos Verstappen has been a driving force behind the career of Max from a tender age onwards. The proud father has stood by his now 18-year old son, to the best of his knowledge and capabilities in order to learn him the tricks of the trade.

“I am extremely happy with the chance Max has gotten to show his prowess at a top team. That has always been our objective. The things Max has shown on track, have had a major influence on that”, says Jos. “Even though the transition has come earlier than expected, you certainly grab the opportunity. There was never a doubt in our minds: Max is ready, he has shown that. His mistakes are few, he grows rapidly and does strong races in which he scores massively. We are very happy that Red Bull has put their faith in Max by transitioning him already to the sister team.”

It is also apparent by means of the new agreement Max has signed with Red Bull. “It is a long term contract, that is of course very important for us. Red Bull has given Max the chance to make his debut in Formula 1, and I think that you need to honour that with loyalty. Red Bull gives us a sense of comfort.” Jos continues: “Max will get a chance to learn again this season, because he will need some time at Red Bull. He will have to deal with a new car, other ways of working and the whole team. Max needs to start slowly, get to know the car and step by step find the limits. Red Bull Racing is allowing him that time. The most important thing is to finish the races and score points.”

Does driving for Red Bull Racing mean more pressure? “There is always pressure. There is now and there was last year when he entered into Formula 1 as a 17-year old. Everyone had their eyes on Max and he has had a fantastic season. He continued on in the same way this year.” In conclusion, Jos has this to say about the future: “Max is now in one of the best Formula 1-teams. Red Bull Racing knows how to build a car and within a few races an improved Tag Heuer-engine will be introduced. That is quite positive for not only the team, but for Max as well. Max is now running in one of the three top teams in Formula 1. What more can you want?”
