It is for Jos Verstappen also hard to grasp what his son Max brought about, after the flag dropped and he was crowned winner of the Spanish Grand Prix. “I still cannot believe it, it is just unbelievable. Max is only 18, but the way he raced today was outright unbelievable. I don’t know what to say”, says Jos after a thrilling race, during which the 18-year old Red Bull Racing-driver, very skillfully, was able to fend off Kimi Raikkonen in his Ferrari.
“When you see him going around the last couple of laps and you know how old the tyres are, I asked myself is he going to make it or not.” A two-stop strategy was apparently tactical the best decision. “In the beginning I was thinking: will it work? Everyone was thinking that I guess. In the end it did work out and I am very pleased with that.”
“Of course, I am very proud. Max and I have done a lot to achieve this. I was so happy last week when we received the phone call that he was allowed to race for Red Bull Racing, because he has a lot more opportunities there. It is unbelievable that in his first weekend he has driven such a great race.”
“This is his biggest achievement so far, but for sure he will be with his two feet on the ground again come tomorrow. I think he knows how to deal with these things”, concludes a father, brimming with pride, regarding his down to earth son.
