Also the top 13! drove within 1 second. Alesi was fastest in 1:17.393 followed by Villeneuve in 1:17.581. Fisichella showed his talent on third spot with 1:17.766. Michael Schumacher again had to let a Jordan in front of him that was 1/100 sec faster. He became fourth in 1:17.771.

Mika Salo and Jos changed position several times during the training. At the end however Jos could not complete his last laps so he could not improve his time anymore. Salo appeared to be fastest in 1:18.429 which was good for position 14. Jos drove to position 19 in 1:18.812. In the second session of the Saturday morning Jos only reaches a 21st position with a best time of 1:18.473. His car has a gearbox problem preventing him from shifting down.
