Max fifth in final Monaco practice
Published on 28 May 2016 by Stefan Meens
Max finished the final practice session of the Monaco GP weekend in fifth. Sebastian Vettel in the Ferrari was first followed by Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Max' team mate, Daniel Ricciardo, managed P4 with the new power unit aboard his RB12.
At the start of the session, the conditions are ideal. Nevertheless not everyone is going out straight away. In fact, the two Red Bulls remain in the pits. It means the Ferraris and Mercedes vie for the top spots in the opening stages of the session.
After 20 minutes the RB12s of Verstappen and Ricciardo join the fray with both clocking impressive lap times. Both improve on their first flying laps with Ricciardo claiming top spot and Max following in P2.
In the final part of FP3, the teams prepare for qualifying by heading out for quali simulations. Vettel shows he is ready for it by posting the quickest time of the session. Both Mercedes follow in second and third. Both Red Bulls are not able to improve on their times set earlier in the session.
In Max' case, on his first quali simulation lap, the Dutchman makes a small mistake on the brakes at Massenet. Monaco does not leave room for mistakes and the 18-year-old skids along the barriers. He has to abort his flying lap to report back the team. After the mechanics repair his lightly damaged RB12, the youngster heads out again but does not improve on his laptime, partially due to several yellow flags.
