Max second in Interlagos opener

Published on 11 November 2016 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen had a positive start to his Brazilian Grand Prix weekend with a second place in FP1. The Dutchman split the two Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton setting the fastest quick around the Autódromo José Carlos Pace.

It is a slow start to the session. Max, apart from an installation lap, does not hit the track until half an hour into FP1. When he does steer his car out of the box, he does so on the medium compound. The youngster shows encouraging pace, setting the third quickest time with a 1:13.4.

With half an hour to go, Red Bull Racing mount a set of the soft Pirellis under Max’ RB12. The youngster makes the most of the quickest compound available this weekend. His 1:11.991 is faster than his team mate’s quickest time and Nico Rosberg in the Mercedes. In the end, only Lewis Hamilton clocks a faster lap, meaning Max finishes the first practice session in second, ahead of Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo.
