Strong start for Red Bull in Singapore, Max third
Published on 15 September 2017 by Stefan Meens
Red Bull Racing started the Singapore GP weekend well with Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen finishing first and third in the opening practice session. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel split the two Bulls with Ricciardo ending up the fastest.
At the start of the session we a couple of familiar and new faces in the cars. Ferrari junior Antonio Giovinazzi will drive FP1 for Haas F1 instead of Kevin Magnussen with Sean Gelael taking Carlos Sainz’ spot in the same session at Scurderia Toro Rosso.
Another increasingly familiar yet new sight is the Halo. This morning Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari), Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren) and Ricciardo test the safety device.
Unlike qualifying and the race, the first practice session is driven in daylight instead of under artificial light in a Grand Prix characterized by plenty of safety cars. None of these factors seems to have fazed the drivers; it is an uneventful session with only Marcus Ericsson causing a short waved yellow.
The Red Bulls are enjoying the high downforce nature of the street circuit and are making the most their RB13. In the end, only Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) and Lewis Hamilton) are close to the two Milton Keynes prepared RB13s.
