Jean Alesi was 18th during first free practice but the fastest driver of the day afterall. His lap time during the second session was 1:19.566. Villeneuve became second at 0.2 sec followed by Ralf Schumeacher, Giancarlo Fisichella, Gerhard Berger and David Coulthard. Jos was able to improve his time a little, however he ended uip in position 17 with 1:23.209. Salo made a big improvement to 1:22.849, he ended in position 14.
