Max: 'Hopefully we close the gap further in Spain'

Published on 10 May 2018 by Stefan Meens

Prior to the Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen is interviewed by the international media in the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing motorhome. The main topic for debate was the crash between Max and team mate Daniel Ricciardo in the last race, the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan, which resulted in a DNF for both drivers.

“Of course, you never want to crash, especially not with your team mate. We’ll try to prevent this. I’ll leave more room the next time, a couple of millimeter”, explains Max, who still has a good relationship with Ricciardo. “Straight after the incident, we talked. We have a lot of respect for each other and we both realized it was wrong what happened. Of course we didn’t want to crash but there are no hard feelings towards each other.”

After Baku, both drivers visited the Red Bull Racing factory in Milton Keynes. “We’re both racers and everybody understands that, even though nobody wants to see this happen. For all the team and people at the factory it was good to hear our take on the situation. We do that regularly; explaining at the factory how the weekend went as well as to thank everybody for their hard work developing our car. We apologised, which is normal, considering what had happened.”

Looking forward, the team are bringing a raft of updates to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. “Hopefully, we can close the gap further and be closer in qualifying. That would be really great. But we have to see what the other teams are bringing. We’ll get a first glimpse on Friday. If it goes well here, things would look good for Monaco.”
