Max second in Monaco FP2: 'Not yet on the limit'
Published on 24 May 2018 by Stefan Meens
After setting the pace in the opening practice session of the Monaco Grand Prix, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing dominated FP2 as well. Daniel Ricciardo was quickest, Max Verstappen second. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel completed the top three, followed by Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes.
“Today went well from the start and it was a positive start”, said Max to Verstappen.nl. “Our car has a lot of grip and is easy to drive. That’s really important on a street circuit like Monaco. I’m happy with that.”
“Today we haven’t been on the limit yet, but we were still fast. We didn’t have any set-up issues, I’ve got the right feeling in the car and there is still margin to improve. Thursday was a good day. Hopefully we can maintain this on Saturday.”
Fifteen minutes into the session, Max heads out for his first run. He instantly sets the quickest lap time on a set of the pink hypersoft Pirelli tyres.
The red flag is waived after 30 minutes; a drain cover between turn four and five has come loose. After 10 minutes of repair, the session is resumed.
Soon after, Max replicated his fast lap from earlier, before nearly running into trouble. The Dutchman allows Romain Grosjean to pass but the Haas driver appears to touch Max’ front wing. Luckily there does not seem to be much damage, if any.
After a visit to the pits, Max heads out for the final 25 minutes in which he focused on the race set-up of the RB14. Meanwhile Ricciardo manages to squeeze out a 1:11.8, ultimately topping the session ahead of Max.
