Max previews Austrian GP: 'Podium always the goal'

Published on 28 June 2018 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen previewed the Austrian Grand Prix at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s motor home. The weekend, taking place at the Red Bull Ring, oozes all things Red Bull, with a hint of orange as thousands of Max Verstappen fans have travelled to Austria to support their compatriot.

“This circuit is certainly not ideal for the RB14 so we’ll have to wait and see how competitive we’ll be. We did get podiums the last two years. In 2016, the competition was stronger, in 2017 we had a bit of luck. Nevertheless, I think we should fight for podiums. That would be a good result. Getting on the podium is always the goal.”

Qualifying is set to be a thriller; the track is short and the differences between the top teams are minor. “During qualifying we’ll be on the limit, which means every track is challenging. Here at the Red Bull Ring, the middle sector is exciting because there are a lot of gravel traps and there is not much run-off.”

Ahead of Saturday’s qualifying, Red Bull Racing are able to use a ‘qualifying-mode’ on their Renault power-unit for the first time. “I expected this the previous race. Anyway, we’ll see how much extra it will give us. It’ll depend on the circuit as well.”

In other news, rumors go round the paddock that Daniel Ricciardo is about to sign a contract extension at RBR. “I think there is a high possibility of that happening. He’s already part of the team, so why would he leave? He’s a great team mate. Outside of the car we have a lot of fun and when we’re in the car we both push each other to a higher level. I really enjoy working with him. He is one of the best team mates in this paddock and one of the strongest. I like the competition so it’s perfect to have him as my team mate.”

Tens of thousands of Dutch fans have travelled to Austria for the Grand Prix. Max loves it: “It’s always great to see so much orange. It doesn’t lead to extra pressure. It’s just brilliant that so many Dutch fans have made such a long journey to support me. The Max Verstappen Village looks amazing.”
