Max third in Hungary opening session

Published on 27 July 2018 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen finished third in the first free practice session of the Hungarian Grand Prix. Aston Martin Red Bull Racing team mate Daniel Ricciardo was quickest ahead of Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari).

At 11am local time, FP1 gets underway at the Hungaroring. Antonio Giovinazzi, enjoying another Friday outing for Sauber, is the first out on track. Daniel Ricciardo is the first driver setting a time.

The session follows the usual FP1 pattern with the drivers using the slowest compound for the weekend (Medium) in the first half an hour before switching to faster rubber later on in the session.

Apart from Marcus Ericsson’s slide in the final corner, the Sauber only narrowly escapes a crash into the barriers, most drivers keep it clean. Max has a spin at the first corner but is able to continue without any issues. The same goes for Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Brendon Hartley, who spins in the dying seconds of the session in the last corner, with no concequences.
