Carlos Sainz to replace Fernando Alonso who is leaving McLaren

Published on 16 August 2018 by Mike Motilall

Carlos Sainz will be switching from Renault to McLaren next year. The 23-year-old Spaniard will be replacing Fernando Alonso, who has announced earlier this week that he will be retiring from Formula 1 come the end of this season. It remains anyone’s guess who will be Sainz’ team mate as our Belgian neighbour Stoffel Vandoorne has not yet been confirmed at the Woking based team.

The driver, who made his début in Formula 1 at Toro Rosso, has had a very short career span at Renault. Sainz joined the French squad last year at the United States Grand Prix after Jolyon Palmer had been shown the door.

A much talked about reunion with Max Verstappen will therefore not be taking place. Instead, it would appear that Pierre Gasly is the one to take that vacant position at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing.

After it was announced that Daniel Ricciardo will be switching to Renault, the ‘silly season’ has gone into full overdrive. However, there still remain a number of drivers who yet need to be confirmed for the following season.
