In the qualifying session held today Jos Verstappen managed a 13th position. The morning session was bad for Jos as he had engine problems, due to which the engine had to be replaced. See European Grand Prix results 1996 for the times of the sessions. The Arrows isn't yet competitive enough as the car has a lot of understeer. Particularly for this fast circuit where the car counts more than the driver. Tom Walkinshaw, who now owns 51 % of the shares in the team, is changing the team for the better though. The staff will grow from 80 people now to 180 people in a couple of months. Somewhere this season the Hart engine will be equipped with pneumatic valves. For next season Tom Walkinshaw tries to get hold of the Honda-Mugen engine.

Jos Verstappen is getting more and more attention from top teams. Magazines all over Europe have commented on Jos' outstanding performance last race and he is praised by former Formula 1 drivers like Keke Rosberg and Jochen Mass. Next season Jos will most certainly drive for a top team. That top team could well be (TWR-)Arrows as the car will improve very fast now that a lot of money from TWR is available. Tom Walkinshaw has offered Jos a contract for next year, but Jos will most certainly get offers from other top teams as well.
