For the time being we do not have much information from France. However when we take a look at the times of the first free practice, we can see that the track is very wet. Rubens Barrichello was fastest in 1:32.292, using the Bridgestone tyres, followed by Damon Hill, also using Bridgestone tyres. Rest of the top 6 looked as followed: Eddie Irvine, Giancarlo Fisichella, Alexander Wurz and Heinz Harald Frentzen. The favorites were disapointing with Michael Schumacher on P13 and Villeneuve on P16.

Jos as not able to set a fast time with 1:52.079. However he still was ahead of Ralf Schumacher and Mika Kakkinen.
