Max Verstappen was one of the drivers joining the first FIA press conference of the 2019 Formula 1 season. The session kicked off with the obvious question: what’s the new Aston Martin Red Bull Racing car like and is it any good?
Max: “We’ll see. We had good winter tests, without many problems. I’m happy to see how everybody worked together. That’s important to have a good start. Integrating the new power-unit into the chassis worked without issues so that’s great. I was able to complete most of my program which is positive.”
The Dutchman added: “In terms of performance, it’s difficult to say where we are. I didn’t get to do a performance run in Barcelona but I’m happy with what we’ve done. Of course, you can always improve, but everybody will say that. We’ll see where we are after the first couple of races.”
Regarding the atmosphere in the factory at Milton Keynes since the collaboration with Honda started, Max is upbeat: “Everybody is very motivated, very positive and very focused on the job.”
A few days before the start of the 2019 season, the FIA announced that a world championship point will be awarded for the fastest lap during the race. Max is not yet sure what to make of the change: “I don’t know. It can be nice, but it can also work against you when you are fighting for a title. But I guess time will tell how it’s all going to work out. But for sure you can play a bit with it, as a team.
