During the first free practice at Canada, Jos did not hit one, but two animals, of which one was a rat. The result was that his car looked like a Ferrari! In the second session Frentzen was fastest in 1:20.289. Most of the driver improved their times, only Michael Schumacher was not able to make any improvements and ended at position 9. Second was Fisichella followed by Villeneuve, Alesi, Panis and Herbert.

Jos also improved his time with the harder compound to 1:22.550 however fell back to position 18. Salo was 16th in 1:21.848
