During the first free practice at Canada, Villeneuve felt at home and drove the fastest lap time in 1:23.094 followed by Michael Schumacher, Frentzen, Hakkinen, Irvine and Alesi. Wurz had some difficulties with the Beneton and did not come further then position 20.

Jos ended in position 16 with 1:23.625, Salo 13 with 1:23.094 and was the fastest Ford engine of the field. Salo drove with hard tyres while Jos tried the softer compound. The softer compound however was no success since he returned in the pit with blisters on his tyres. Also Jos did hit an animal on the track. Blood of the animal was found on his helm and seat. Tyrrell will test today a new front suspension. At the end of the day they will decide if they are going to use it for the rest of the weekend.
