Max in Monza: 'Maybe the biggest step'

Ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Max Verstappen reflected on his Spa weekend as well as previewing the final European race of the season.

“I think it was a racing incident. My wheels did not lock and I did have control over my car. I braked a bit later than Kimi and was halfway alongside him. But Kimi didn’t know I was alongside. That’s what you heard on the radio. There’s not much you can do. It was just unlucky”, said Max about his first corner incident at the previous race in Belgium.

For the Italian Grand Prix, Max’ RB15 will feature the spec 4 Honda power-unit. “We have more power, which is always positive. Ferrari still has a lot more power but we’re getting closer to Mercedes. But now we’re making bigger gains in terms of power, maybe even the biggest.”

Because of a power-unit replacement, Max will start the race from the back of the grid. Therefore, chances of a podium finish are slim. “The problem here at Monza is that we’ll be less competitive compared to Ferrari and Mercedes. On other tracks where I started from the back and worked my way to a podium, we had a fast car as well as being able to opt for a different tyre strategy. Honestly, I don't expect a podium. If we have a normal race, without incidents, fifth would be a good result.

Finally, looking at the weather forecast, there is a threat of rain. “Generally speaking, I’d prefer rain. On a dry track we have less of a chance. If it rains, hopefully we’ll be more competitive. I’m looking forward to the weekend to find a good balance on the car.”
