The first session of the free practice for the grand prix of Germany was held on a wet circuit. Although the circuit dried up during the session, it started to rain again at the end. The brothers Schumacher felt at home on the circuit of Hockenheim. Ralf was fastest in 1:46.196 followed by Michael in 1:46.322. The top six was completed as followed, Herbert, Barrichello, Fontana and Diniz!

Due to the wet track, advantages of high power motors was not as high as expected. This was seen with the result of Jos who drove to an excellent tenth position in 1:47.720, only 1.5 sec. behind Ralf Schumacher. Salo had some difficulties at the beginning of the free session. Therefor he was forced to set a time at the end of the session, when it was raining. His time of 1:08.038 was good for position 19.
