The weather was dry during the first free session. Jacques Villeneuve had the fastest lap time by far (1:24.085), followed by Michael Schumacher, Wurz, Frentzen, Alesi and Irvine.

Jos completed the first session in 20th position in 1:27.923. Salo ended the first session in position 12 with 1:26.344. Jos drove with a race setup (lots of fuel) and Salo with a qualifying setup (little fuel). At the end of the session Mika Salo blew up his engine.
