Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone has threatened to pull the plug on world championship races in western Europe if the continent embraces a total ban on tobacco advertising, one of the sports main sources of funding. In an interview in the weekly Welt am Sonntag, Ecclestone said: "If a tough law is adopted, there will a tough reaction from us. I can't see a ban being introduced, because it wouldn't make sense. I don't think the European governments are short-sighted. I'm sure there will be a compromise."
Ford has confirmed that it will dispense with its long-serving ED V8 engine at the end of this season. Development has ceased as the company concentrates on the all-new V10 due for 1998. "We've decided to put all our eggs in one basket. It didn't make sense to focus in two different directions." said Ford's European motorsport boss Martin Whitaker. Ford will supply customer V10 engines next year, although these have to be two specifications behind Stewart Grand Prix's works unit.
