Max at Nurburgring: 'Both Red Bull and Honda want the best for me'

Published on 08 October 2020 by Stefan Meens

Formula 1 is back at the Nurburgring for the first time since 2013. This weekend’s Eifel Grand Prix, will be Max Verstappen’s first F1 race on the German circuit. “It’s a great track with a technical first sector. I enjoyed it in Formula 3, so I’m looking forward to it. The weather is typical for the Nurburgring, cold and wet. But that’s the same for everyone. It will be difficult to get the tyres up to temperature in the first lap. And because it will probably rain on Friday, data gathering will be more difficult.”

Max arrived in the paddock several days after Honda announced to leave Formula 1 at the end of 2021. “It’s a shame, but I can’t change the decision. We’ll give it our all in the final year and a half, and so will Honda. We’ll try together to finish this as good as we can. To be honest, you could feel it coming. I guess the whole situation in the whole wide world is definitely not helping.”

The plans for post-2021 remain unclear. “The news is only just out, so speculating about all the possible scenarios doesn’t really help. We’ll see how it goes. I’ll leave it to Red Bull; they’re busy planning the future. All options are open and we still have a year and a half to build an engine into the car. Red Bull has always been good at getting things to fit in a short space of time. I know that both Red Bull and Honda want the best for me. And as long as we are competitive, that’s the most important.”
