Jacques Villeneuve will start from pole position ...

Published on 23 August 1997 by Verstappen Info Page

Jacques Villeneuve will start from pole position in tomorrow's Belgian Grand Prix. The rain we saw earlier this weekend was gone which enabled the drivers to set quick times. Villeneuve's time was a 1m49.450s.
The Arrows team again caused the surprise of the day. Pedro Diniz set his best qualifying position ever. His 8th place was enough to out-qualify teammate Hill.
Jos had to be satisfied with 21st place on the grid. In his hunt for a quick time he made a spin which effectively ended his day's work. Verstappen admitted that it was his own mistake: " I missed my braking point before the tight Rivage corner on my third flying lap and put the car into the gravel". He arrived back in the pitlane but it was too late to go out again in the spare-car. His best time was a 1m53.725s. Mika Salo set a 19th time. It goes without saying that Jos is far from happy with this result. He was not the only one in the Tyrrell team who was hoping for a better result this afternoon. Mika Salo and Harvey Postlethwaite were also expecting more from the afternoon session. "Whilst we cannot be happy with our grid places I feel that we have squeezed all we can from our package here this weekend", said the Tyrrell designer.
