On Spa Francorchamps there is always at least one day that is dominated by the rain. Today, the first free practice for the grand prix of Belgium started on a wet circuit. Due to the rain, the lap time were far above two minutes. Berger was fastest today in 2:06.802 followed by Alesi, Hill, Michael Schumacher, Coulthard and Herbert.

Jos did not drive a lot of laps. At the end of the first session, he tried to improve his time, but went off the track. Therefor he was not able to improve his time of 2:14.048 on position 22nd. Salo drove to P20 in 2:13.256.
