YES, YES, YES! Verstappen finished on an excellent sixth place, scoring points, in a race that was pure excitement from start to end. Villeneuve had a bad start, holding up Verstappen among others. Coulthard slipped through the gap. After a couple of laps Villeneuve took over Verstappen and Barrichello. In lap 14 Jos had a short tense moment and went through the gravel, causing him to fall back to the 11th position. Due to retirement of Hakkinen Verstappen came back to the 10th position.

In lap 27 a spin of Rosset caused Luca Badoer to topple over. A safety car came into the track for a couple of laps causing everyone to get together again. In lap 32, when the safety car was off the track again, the car of Diniz suddenly caught fire, probably caused by a faulty closing ring of the fuel tank.

Frentzen got off and Verstappen got the 8th position. Shortly after that Jos overtook Irvine so he now occupied position number 7. Due to pitstops Jos climbed up to the 5th position in lap 44, when he himself had to go out for his last pitstop. He came back on the track just behind Panis.

His march to the sixth position then began. He first overtook Panis and was on position 7 again after Berger got off. A fantastic braking action in lap 61 caused Jos to get passed Coulthard.

He now occupied the 6th position, which he held to the end of the race, although he nearly overtook Irvine in the final lap. See Argentine Grand Prix results 1996 for the race times.
