Michael Schumacher will start the Grand Prix ...

Published on 09 August 1997 by Verstappen Info Page

Michael Schumacher will start the Grand Prix of Hungary from pole position. The German reigned througout the practice session and even managed to further take his pole position time out of reach of the opposition. Jos Verstappen set the 18th time and was a second quicker than this morning. His fastest time was a 1m17.095. Jos said he drove a near perfect lap in his third of his four runs. His reaction: "I don't think there was much more we could have done today. The car was handling well and we made some adjustments which also helped. It will be a difficult race again tomorrow, but I hope to make up some places at the start and then complete the distance. If it is as hot as it usually is there could be a lot of retirements during the 77 laps."
Mika Salo was 4 tenths slower than Jos and will start from 21st position tomorrow.the Finn had a brief conflict with Jacques Villeneuve whom he blocked undeliberately. Villeneuve took his revenge a lap later by ruining Salo's flying lap.
The surprise of the day was Damon Hill's 3rd place. The reigning World Champion will start from the second row on the grid alongside Mika Hakkinen. What was also striking was that Johnnie Herbert and Rubens Barrichello were split by 0.000s, they drove exactly the same time. The Briton will get the advantage on the starting grid tomorrow as he set his time earlier in the session.
