In the second free training session, all drivers were able to improve their fastest lap times. Jos his fastest time was 1:19.346. At that time it was good for the fifth fastest time, however a lot of drivers improved their times at the end of the session, therefor he fell back to position 14. Salo drove with 1:20.106 to position 19 at the end of the session.

Michael Schumacher was fastest again in 1:17.583. At the end of the session he also tried to improve his time but spun off the track, followed by Trulli and Alesi who also spun off. The top six was completed as followed: Coulthard, Trulli, Frentzen, Hill and Ralf Schumacher.
