Max: 'If there's a chance to win a title, you have to go for it'

Published on 01 July 2021 by Stefan Meens

This weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix will be held at the Red Bull Ring, the venue where Max scored his latest victory last week, when he clinched a dominant win at the Styrian Grand Prix. Does the Red Bull Racer expect a boring event as he is racing at the same track twice in a row? “No, especially if you have a chance at winning, I always like to return then! The Red Bull Ring is also our home track so that motivates a lot.”

After his win last week Max and Red Bull have extended their leads in the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. Nevertheless, the Dutchman remains realistic and does not expect it to be easy. “Nobody is going to give up early on, everyone will fight until the end. We’ll just need to keep pushing and see what that brings us. It’s a long season and we have to work hard at every circuit.”

Red Bull will have to find a balance between providing updates and develop the 2022 car, the latter being a huge project due to the vast regulation changes. What is Red Bull’s strategy? “There will be some updates coming our way in the next few races, that’s something we need to keep doing. If you have the chance to win a championship, you really have to go for it. We’ve worked hard for a lot of years to be in this position, so then you ought to go for it.”

On Friday, all drivers have the opportunity to try the new Pirelli rear tyre, which features a new construction. “We’ll see how it affects everyone, but I’m not too worried. I don’t expect a huge difference. As long as they stay in one piece”, Max smiled, referring to his tyre blow-out in Baku.
