During the first free practice of today, Olivier Panis was the first driver on the track this morning. It took however more then half an hour before fast lap times were clocked. At the end of the session, both McLarens were fastest. Coulthard (who spinned at the end of the session) set the fastest time at 1:18.912 followed by his team mate Mika Hakkinen in 1:19.074. Rest of the top six was: Berger, Michael Schumacher, Villeneuve (at 0.1 sec. behind Michael Schumacher) and Ralf Schumacher.

Jos drove very well and was able (like Salo) to improve his fastest lap time more then once. He ended up in position 15, 2 seconds behind Coulthard and 0.2 second in front of Salo.
