Max ahead of season opener: 'I place the pressure to be better on myself'

Published on 18 March 2022 by Stefan Meens

On Friday noon and 3pm GMT, the first two free practice sessions of the 2022 Formula 1 season are scheduled at the Bahrain International Circuit. The sessions could paint a first picture of the pecking order, following the extensive rule changes ahead of this year’s campaign.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen says it is hard to predict who will be on top. “We have to wait and see, but the upgrade we used on the last pre-season test day, resulted in quick lap times, so we’re happy with that. But that wasn’t a race weekend. We won’t know until qualifying where we are at.”

On Sunday, the Dutch Oracle Red Bull Racing driver will contest his first race as world champion. Will that title ease the pressure? “I might be a bit more relaxed, but as soon as I get in the car, I go for it and I’ll try to win. That’s the pressure I put on myself; to become a better driver every time I go out. I want to improve myself every year and it starts again this weekend”, concludes Max.
