In the second free practice session on Saturday Pedro Diniz surprised everyone by setting the fastest time, only 0.003 faster than Jan Magnussen who was second. Villeneuve, Trulli, Irvine and Hakkinen completed the top 6. Both Jos and Mika strongly improved their times but this was just good enough for positions 21 and 22.
