Max ahead of first Miami GP: 'Fancy our chances'

Published on 06 May 2022 by Stefan Meens

Ahead of the first Miami Grand Prix, Max Verstappen arrived in the USA a few days before the racing starts to spend some time with family and friends in Florida. The Oracle Red Bull Racing driver visited a Miami Marlins baseball game and drove a ‘swamp buggy’ through the water, before arriving at the new street circuit for the first time.

During the Grand Prix weekend, Max will sport a one-off helmet design: “It’s a special Grand Prix and the first one in Miami. I think everyone is looking forward to this one so I thought it would be the perfect occasion to race with a special design.”

A new circuit means a new challenge for the teams and drivers. “To be honest, I hope it’ll be a boring race for me, like Imola”, smiles Max. “But it will be challenging. The high temps and the weather can play a big part. The circuit has a lot of fast sections, but also a twisty part. It’ll be difficult to find the right balance. We’ll have to wait and see. It’s a new track surface so we don’t know what the grip levels will be like.”

In terms of competitiveness, Max is optimistic. “Generally speaking, I fancy our chances, but you still have to pull it off.”
